The 1995–96 campaign was a difficult chapter for Queens Park Rangers. For the previous three seasons, QPR had finished fifth, ninth, and eighth in the FA Premier League, largely thanks to the goals of Les Ferdinand. Following his £6 million transfer to Newcastle United, the new strike partnership of Kevin Gallen and Danny Dichio failed to replicate that output. Even with excellent support from winger Trevor Sinclair, the team could not generate enough goals. Under player-manager Ray Wilkins, it became clear the club was facing a hard season. Despite a 3–0 win over London rivals West Ham United in late April, QPR could not avoid relegation. A glimmer of hope appeared in late April with a 3–0 victory over West Ham United, but it was not enough to prevent relegation. After 13 years in the top flight, QPR were confirmed out of the FA Premier League.
